Bernice Mary Hayes was born in Sutton, Nebraska while her parents Thomas Dean and Carrie Hayes were visiting relatives. They returned to their home in Montana where Bernice grew up and learned pride in her Irish heritage, a focus on family, and a love of Native American art.
She attended Creighton University School of Pharmacy where she met another pharmacy student who became the love of her life, Eugene Francis Lanspa. They married while Gene was attending Creighton Medical school, and they began their life together in Lincoln, then Omaha. They raised four children (Michael, Stephen, Rosemary, and Thomas) who gave them many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bernice volunteered at St. Joan of Arc School, Christ the King, and Creighton. She was known for her kindness and optimism. She spent her later years keeping up with the news from all her grandchildren.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene F. Lanspa.
