Deane A. Gacke

March 15, 1948 — June 4, 2021

Deane Anthony Gacke was born on March 15, 1948 in Tyler, MN to Walter and Mary. The family lived on a farm until Deane was four when they moved to Arco where Walter opened his own gas station. Growing up helping his dad, he gained an interest and knowledge of mechanical maintenance. In high school, Deane played football and basketball for the Ivanhoe Eagles. It was there he met his love, Cheryl Ann VanOverbeke, who he would spend the rest of his life with. After graduation, Deane worked at the high school in the athletic department until he joined the Air Force on February 14, 1967.

He and Cher were married on November 21, 1970 and they started their life together as a military family. Of this union, two daughters were born, of whom he was very proud, Tamberina Kaye and Lacy Marie. He often joked they were the cause of his gray hair: Tami on the right, Lacy on the left. For thirty years, Deane proudly served his country, relocating every few years. His career as an Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) maintenance technician and supervisor sent him to six states, and several countries, including a four-year PCS to England where he and his family were able to meet relatives on his mother’s side for the first time. Deane retired on January 31, 1997 at the distinguished rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

After retirement, Deane held various part time jobs, one of which was returning to his roots of working at a service station. He had a passion for reading and history, and he loved to share his knowledge with anyone who was interested. Deane enjoyed gardening, playing cards, storytelling and making up songs to sing (off-key) to his six grandchildren. He often joked they were the cause of his hair loss.

Deane passed away at his home in LaVista, NE on June 4, 2021. He will be remembered by family and friends as a big personality who loved to joke, plan surprises, and tell epic stories. Deane loved his family with his whole heart, especially his Cher, the love of his life.

Blessed be his memory.

Deane is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Cheryl; daughters, Tami Tremmel and Lacy (Joshua) Dube; 6 grandchildren, Jensen, Olivia, Ewan, Liam, Mila and Elin; siblings, Susan (John Hedetniemi) Gacke and Carl (Debbie) Gacke; his extended family and many good friends.
