Dennis “Rob” Robert Thorne passed away surrounded by family and friends, at his home in Plattsmouth, NE on November 28, 2017 after a long, well fought fight with cancer.
His life was a great adventure and was lived to its fullest. The adventure began in Ludington, MI on July 13, 1967, born to parents Robert Thorne and Joan Herlein. As a youth, the adventure led him to many states and education at many schools, enhancing his love for reading, researching, and learning. Rob graduated from Boulder High School in 1985. Following the example set by several family members he enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at McCord AFB, Washington. In 1989 he decided to leave the Air Force temporarily to pursue his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. In 1991 Rob received his commission and returned to active duty as a 2nd Lt. During his first assignment at Grand Forks AFB in 1993, he met and married Caroline (Prudhomme) Skrabut on January 18, 1995. Rob received his Master’s degree in Human Resources from Central Michigan University in 1997.
The couple and their children, Christopher and Cassandra, continued the adventure with assignments at Shriever AFB, CO, Vandenberg AFB, CA, and Offutt AFB, NE. In May 2010, Lt. Col Dennis Robert Thorne retired from active duty and continued to serve his country as a civilian at US Strategic Command until November 2017. While proudly serving his country, he took great joy in being out in nature: hunting, fishing, competitive shooting, and most of all spending time with family and friends. Rob’s life adventure has reached its conclusion and Rob has left us all with love and beautiful memories to carry us through until we meet again.
Rob is survived by his wife, Caroline (Prudhomme) Thorne; children, Christopher and Cassandra Skrabut (Dan Noble); mother, Joan Herlein Watkins; father, Robert (Lola) Thorne; brother, David Thorne (Shannon); other siblings, Valerie, Ann and Rick; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and very special friends and family. He is preceded in death by grandparents, John and Helen Thorne, and Robert and Marie Herlein; in-laws, Donald and Helen Prudhomme.
In lieu of flowers, family will direct memorials.
