Doreen was born September 23, 1931, in Izmir, Turkey to Jack & Winnie Whittall. Jack was with the British diplomatic service. Doreen was the second of four children, her older brother Desmond, and younger sisters Wendy and Heather.
Doreen graduated from an all-girls English boarding school in Istanbul where she demonstrated a gift for languages, she was fluent in four.
Ed Hersey, who was in the US Air Force stationed in Turkey after the war, met Doreen at an Embassy party. Love at first sight! They became engaged and were married in Athens.
Doreen enjoyed several hobbies, Golf (a stickler for the rules), playing bridge (serious bridge player), reading, travel (US and Europe), animals (her dachshund Lisa was her favorite. She had more pictures of Liza than of Diane, Mike and Carol it seemed. Watching sports on TV was a favorite pass time, especially the Huskers.
She was a proud “Nanny” as her grandchildren – Jim Wohl, Ann Wohl and Elizabeth Scaletta called her. Another highlight was her great-granddaughter, Aida. Doreen always wanted to see “that baby.”
Preceded in death by her husband Ed Hersey, her parents Jack and Winnie, and brother Desmond. She is survived by her children Diane (Paul) Wohl, Mike (Carol) Hersey, and Carol Monnier. Her grandchildren Jim (Vicky) Wohl, Anne Wohl, Elizabeth (Quinton) Scaletta, and great-granddaughter Aida Wohl.
We have cherished the time we had with our mom and grandmother and will miss her greatly.
Memorial Service Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 11:00am at the Pacific Street Funeral Home with a visitation one hour prior to the service. She will be buried in the National cemetery with her husband Ed Hersey.
In accordance with Doreen’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, she kindly requests that donations be made to the Nebraska Humane Society (8929 Fort Street, Omaha, NE 68134) and Wounded Warrior Project (758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516)
