Dorothy E. "Betty" Menck

January 1, 1925 — September 28, 2015

Betty earned the title of New Year’s Baby, being the first child born in Omaha in 1925, to Philip (Jack) and Sadie Gleason. She graduated from Central High School and the Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her registered nursing degree in 1947, through Cadet Nurse Corp, a program which trained nurses for service in World War II. Betty’s photograph is featured in a book that describes this program, Learning to Care, tending to an injured serviceman. Betty and her husband owned Menck and McGovern Glass, where Betty worked part-time promoting their services. She was also an enthusiastic docent at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. When their children were growing up, they lived in several homes, the majority of the time on Leavenworth Street, near the University of Nebraska at Omaha. They also had a cabin in Woodcliff, near Fremont, Nebraska, where the Menck’s experienced the great outdoors. Betty enjoyed life to the fullest, and along with Jerry, was in a dancing club with friends. Betty welcomed many relatives and friends to live with her family, and some for extended stays. Betty is preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 51 years, Jerry Menck. She is survived by sons, Tom (Peggy) Menck of Omaha, and Ted (Vicki) Menck of Palatine, IL; grandchildren, Scott, Jessie, Robin, Andy and Philip; great-granddaughter, Audrey; nephews, Phil Gleason and Barry, and Denny Berquist.
