Dr. Thomas (Tom) Alfred Ruma Jr., 73, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on November 11,
2023.
Thomas Ruma was born on August 19, 1950, in Omaha, Nebraska to Thomas and Sarita Ruma.
Raised in Omaha, Tom graduated from Creighton Preparatory High School in 1968. He
continued his education at Creighton University. Following his passion for helping others, Tom
attended Creighton University School of Medicine graduating in 1975, followed by residency
training in pathology at Creighton University and Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New
York. With strong ties to Nebraska, Tom returned to Omaha to begin his pathology practice. Dr.
Ruma was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses and patients as a compassionate and caring
physician.
In 1971, Tom married Cynthia (Owca) Ruma Together, they built a wonderful life in Omaha.
Tom coached his three children in soccer, loved spending time on the water, fishing, hiking,
dabbling in glass fusion. He appreciated fine wine and classic cars, spent countless hours in the
kitchen, cooking, and of course, enjoying a cigar or two every now and again. Tom loved
spending time with his grandchildren, traveling and rooting for the Cornhuskers. His smile and
laugh will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy of Omaha; three children, Michael (Kari) Ruma of
Albuquerque, New Mexico; Matthew (Lyndsay) Ruma of Omaha, Nebraska; Julie (Brian)
Scallen of Northville, Michigan; four grandchildren, Taylor, Tommy, Sam, and Jane; his sister,
Sarah Ruma of Omaha, Nebraska; and his cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
VISITATION begins Thursday, November 16, with the family present from 5-7 PM at John A.
Gentleman 72 nd Street Chapel with a WAKE SERVICE at 7PM.
FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at Sacred Heart Church 2218 Wirt St, Friday, November 17 at 10 am.
Lunch immediately after the Funeral Service at the Sons Of Italy Hall 1238 South 10th St.
The family would like to thank the staff at Legato Living Legacy for the loving care.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that MEMORIALS be directed to CUES School System to provide funds to children who might not be able to participate in soccer.
