Eldon Howard RHODIG, was born the first son of two children
of Ora Leonard RHODIG (1905-1969) and Helen Florence HAYES (1907-1985), on
October 12, 1930 on a farm north of Norton County, Kansas. Eldon was baptized in the Methodist Church of
Alma, NE in 1952 and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church of Omaha, NE in 1958.
He attended first and second grade in
Frontier and Buffalo Schools in Kansas, third and fourth grade in Alemena, KS, fifth
grade at Bloomington, NE, sixth grade at Grand Island, NE , seventh and eighth
at Alma, NE and graduating from Alma High School in 1948. He participated in football, basketball,
track and two years of boxing. After
graduating, he worked for Roy Hogeland Painting, painting bridges all over the
state of Nebraska and hauling cattle into Omaha.
February 1952, Eldon Rhodig was inducted into the U.S. Army
training at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He served
with Company L, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division and
arrived in Korea on August 14. During
his service, Private First Class Rhodig is cited for heroism in against an
armed enemy near Taebanggok, Korea on Dec 2, 1952 receiving the Combat Infantry
Badge and The Bronze Star with a"V", device for heroic achievement in
connection with military operations against an armed enemy. He was honorably discharged from Camp
Atterbury, Indiana in November 1953. Eldon
enrolled at Milford Trade School in the Body and Fender Department and
graduated. He was employed with Hulac Chevrolet
Company from 1954 -1960, Allstate Insurance Company as an adjustor for 31
years, 1960-1991. Upon retiring he
continued to work on cars restoring two Model T's and assortment of small
engines. Eldon was a charter member of Atonement
Lutheran church and the American Legion Post #1, V. F. W. Post 2503 of Omaha.
He was united in marriage to Phyllis Marie Seybold Golter on
August 21, 1954 in Lincoln, NE and moved to Omaha, NE. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Ora
and Helen Rhodig and son, Allen Leroy Rhodig, grandson, Ethan Anderson Rhodig. He
is survived by his wife, Phyllis; brother, DeWayne(Lorene) Rhodig; son, Brian (Laura) Rhodig; grandchildren,
Joshua, Jacob, Benjamin, Nicholas and great grandson, Carter; brother, DeWayne (Maxine) Rhodig; nieces and nephews.
