Gary D. Smith

Gary D. Smith, 68, passed away after a brave, 19 month battle with kidney cancer. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Edgar J. and Elizabeth R. Smith. Gary excelled in wrestling in high school and was offered a wrestling scholarship to the University of Nebraska. He was a lifelong Cornhusker and Philadelphia Eagles fan. His last wish was to see his beloved Eagles play one last time. Dream Weavers Foundation provided this wonderful last gift.

Gary joined the Army Reserves as a cook and established a lifelong career of serving others in the food service industry. He was the owner operator of Charlie’s Grilled Steak in the Mall of the Bluffs in Council Bluffs, IA. Gary enjoyed interacting with young people and teaching them basic work skills and a solid work ethic they needed to succeed in life. His last jobs were with the Henry Doorly Zoo and the Bellevue School District Transportation Department.

Survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Sharon Smith; brother, Kenneth W. (Linda) Smith of Columbia, SC; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Gary loved and was loved by everyone who met him.
