Gerald M. Messbarger

May 14, 1929 — November 2, 2021

Gerald Martin Messbarger, 92 of Omaha, NE, passed away on November 2, 2021.

Gerry was born in Parnell, MO to Fred and Anna (O’Day) Messbarger, with his twin sister, Geraldine, on May 14, 1929. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School in St Joseph, MO; Alexian Brothers School of Nursing in St Louis, MO and St Joseph Hospital/Creighton School of Nursing Anesthesia in Omaha, NE.

He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Gerry married Sally (Bloomberg) on June 7th, 1954 at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Omaha. They raised their family in Kearney, NE where he formed Midwest Anesthesia, PC and proudly provided anesthetics to tens-of-thousands of patients in Kearney and the surrounding area. One of his proudest accomplishments was serving on both state and national boards of the

American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

In 1994 Gerry and Sally relocated to Omaha, NE and Waianae, HI for retirement. He was a lifetime member of the AANA, Elks Lodge #984, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, the American Red Cross and the Rob Morris Lodge #46 A.F & A.M. In retirement, he enjoyed volunteering for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief.

His fourteen grandchildren all made him proud for their big and small achievements. He was a man who never knew a stranger and could find a topic of conversation with anyone who wanted to chat. He was renowned for all of his silly songs, random Spanish phrases and recitation of the twelve cranial nerves. His grandchildren loved that he was the ‘Donut Fairy’, that he randomly called friends and relatives whenever the thought crossed his mind and that he could not pass up chocolate or ice cream, especially a good chocolate shake. He left his footprint on the heart of many.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sally; Daughter-in-law Cathy Messbarger, daughter Terri and husband Vic Schutte, son Jeff and wife Janice, Daughter-in-law Amy Messbarger, daughter Sara and husband Kent Oelkers, daughter Ann and husband Zig Rodriguez; grandchildren: Melissa, Meghan, Nicole, Bryan, Tanner, Ashley, Jon Aaron, Travis, Macey, Alex, Sadie, McKenzie, Sam, Ben and fifteen great-grandchildren; brothers: Charles (Judy) and Richard (Saundra); sisters-in-law: Pat Messbarger and Jane Messbarger and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Fred; sons, Jon ‘Randy’ and Merrill ‘Mick’; brothers Francis (Lorene), John (Helen), Ed, Paul; sisters Loretta (Sonny) Hager and Geraldine (Bud) Morris; great grandchildren Jaxton and Nyx.
