Gerald Patrick “Joe” or “Joe the Mailman” Dobson was born May 29th, 1933 and passed away on the September 24th, 2018. Joe was the youngest of five children in an Irish Catholic family all of whom attended Omaha St Cecilia’s. After school, Joe served in the Air Force from 1952-1956 as a crew chief working on P-51s, C-47s, and assorted other aircraft in Montana. After his stint in the Air Force, Joe returned to Omaha and started working for the Fire Department and General Electric. He started working as an Omaha Mail Carrier in 1961 and continued for 28 years until his retirement in 1989. He mail route encompassed 72nd and Pacific area and affectionally became known as “Joe the Mailman.”
Joe was father to six children: Kevin; Kelly Schram (Joe); Kraig (Tricia), Karon Bradley (Bobby); Kayne (Tricia); Konal (Mimi), 14 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren; also survived by sister Kathy Pritchard (Gerard), and by sister in-laws Jo Ann Dobson and Jackie Dobson.
Joe was an ardent Democrat, a fan of the Corn Huskers and Green Bay Packers, and he loved a good story. Joe loved the Zoo, particularly the Primates area where he could tell you about each one. He provided financial support to multiple causes without regard for his own finances. If Joe’s children were competing in athletics, the loudest voice in support would be their dad’s voice and he was always there cheering his kids on! Joe had a passion for life and we, his family, are greater for him sharing some of that passion with us.
