Janice K. Underhill

Janice Kathryn Harrington Underhill was born on November 28, 1928 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Edward and Alice Harrington. Janice was the 3rd of 4 children. Her father died when she was 10 years old and Janice and her family's lives changed dramatically. Her mother had to go to work, which was rare in the 1930's and many aunts and uncles helped out her family. Her extended Irish family became very important to her. Janice was a very good student in school. She attended Catholic Schools until she graduated from high school. She went on to graduate from Salem State Teachers College in Massachusetts and worked as an elementary school teacher. She taught until she was married but was forced to "retire" because the school where she taught frowned on married teachers.



Janice met Gus at Fisherman's Beach through mutual friends. They were married July 8, 1950. She was a Navy wife as her husband served in WWII and the Korean War. They had 4 daughters, Sherry, Nancy, Julie and Lori in 7 year's time. Janice was a very busy stay at home mom. Through Gus's jobs there were many moves for career advancement and Janice was always very willing to pick up and embrace the next of their adventures and experiences in a new home! Janice and Gus loved to travel and visited most of the 50 states, the Caribbean, and Europe. They also spent many retirement winters living in Florida, Janice always loved being close to the water. Some wonderful trips and memories were had with family and their many lifelong friends. They were married for 67 years.



Janice became a grandmother to her first of 12 grandchildren in 1975 and became a great-grandmother in 2004 to the first of her 12 great-grandchildren. Her best days were spent either one-on-one with these lucky children or in a group of as many of them that could fit in a room! She seemed to always know what each wonderful accomplishment they were achieving or mischief they got into! She especially loved cheering them on at their sporting events, and being a part of milestone events like baptisms, first communions and marriages over the many years.



Janice lived 91 healthy, wonderful, busy years and made many friends wherever she went. She instilled so many wonderful qualities in all of the generations of her family. From her beautiful handmade quilts made with love, her love of cards and games, and her tendencies to "say what she felt", she was a one of a kind woman who will be greatly missed.



Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Augustus M. Underhill, Jr., Survived by her four daughters, Sherry (John) Wupper, Nancy (Ross) Schmidt, Julie (Gavin) Beglin, and Lori (James) McKean; grandchildren, Joseph (Kassie) Sands, James (Katy) Sands, Jonathan Sands, Brad Schmidt, Aly (Brandon) Cook, Lindsey (Brett) Beglin, Mandy (Brian) Vodvarka, Kelsey Beglin, Evan McKean, Lanessa (Bill) Schlote, Ethan (Sara) McKean and Larissa McKean; great grandchildren, Xavier, Connor, Jackson, Tierney, Letty, Jacob, Kaleb, Vara, Davis, Kaari, Finley, and Charlotte; Janice is also survived by her sister June Pierce of Lynnfield, MA and many nieces, nephews and relatives around the country.
