JoEtta Ann Vernon

JoEtta (JoEy) Ann Tenney Vernon, 82, of Elkhorn, NE, passed away on October 19, 2023. JoEy is survived by her husband Gerald (Jerry) Vernon, sons David (Nora) Vernon and Kent (Theresa) Vernon, and grandchildren Michael Vernon, Grant Vernon, Laurel Vernon, Hailey Vernon, Paige (Matt) Wickwire, Tiger Tuchel and Mattias Tuchel. She is preceded in death by her son Douglas Vernon, parents Russell and Trulah Tenney, brother Vincent Tenney and sister Betty Huston. JoEy was born in Hillsdale, MI, on August 24, 1941. JoEy graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, MI, and in 1962 married her high school sweetheart, Jerry. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from University of Minnesota and a PhD in sociology from University of Nebraska. While raising three boys and moving to various cities with Jerry, JoEy spent more than 20 years working in healthcare. She worked as a nurse and taught nursing at Augsburg College, Abbott Northwestern and Methodist hospitals in Minneapolis, MN, taught clinical nursing at University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND, and served as a hospital administrator at University of St. Louis, MO. JoEy was a member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Elkhorn, NE. JoEy’s vibrant personality and huge heart will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and two cats (Minnie and Lucy) and her lively conversations will be missed by everyone, especially those in her book clubs. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Augustine or the Christian Outreach Program of Elkhorn (COPE) food pantry.
