Preceded in death by her parents, John and MarieShannon of Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, husband, Maurice Robert Grier; brother John (Marty) Shannon, Joe (wives, Joan and Ann) Shannon, Lynn (Norman) LaFleur. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Grier, Connie (Ken) Pedersen and Kathy (Mike) David; grandchildren, Michael Bryan, Eric Schmidt, Curt (Kassie) Schmidt, Chris (Cara) David, Leslie (Chris) Duskin, Maurissa (Jason) Garry, Mark (Hannah) Pedersen; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grand daughter; brother, Leo (the late Delores) Shannon. Mary attended St. Ann’s Academy in Wilkes-Barre, PA., graduating in 1941. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in April of 1944. She finished her training at St. Alban’s Naval Hospital on Long Island. She signed on to become a nurse in the United States Army Nurse Corps as a Second Lieutenant. Due to partial blindness in one eye, she was unable to serve overseas but completed her tour of duty stateside. Mary worked at Doctors Hospital in New York City. Her job therewas administering care to the wounded soldiers who were convalescing. It was in New York that she met her late husband, Maurie Grier, a Navy Lieutenant from Omaha, NE. They became engaged in May of 1946 and were married that August. Maurie finished his education in Iowa State on the GI Bill after which they moved to Omaha to live and start a family. Mary and Maurie enjoyed many years together with family and friends. Maurie passed away in 1975. Mary was very active in her faith and community. She loved sports and was a life long swimmer and tennis player. Most of all she cherished her family and was involved in every aspect of their lives. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss their Nonnie.
Services:
Services will be held Saturday, 10:00 A.M. at the St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church.
Interment:
Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation:
Visitation begins Friday at 5:30 pm in the John A. Gentleman Mortuaries, 72nd Street Chapel, 1010 North 72 Street Omaha, Nebraska 68114, with a Wake Service at 7:00 pm.
