Max L. Harris

August 22, 1933 — August 20, 2024

Bellevue

Max L. Harris passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, in Omaha, NE at the age of 90. He led a happy, full, and devoted life, anchored by his deep love for his wife of 63 years, Marilyn, and their children. Max connected effortlessly with everyone he met, whether human or animal, and his gentle spirit was adored by all. His optimism, wit and above all, warmth, will be greatly missed.

Max was born on August 22, 1933, in Alliance, Nebraska, to Ruby Fae and Ace Harris. After graduating from Alliance High School in 1954, he joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country until 1958. Upon his honorable discharge, Max returned to Alliance, where he met Marilyn Fenster at a dance. They fell deeply in love and married in 1959, sharing an extraordinary bond that blessed them with a beautiful family. Their first son Mark, was born 1963 in Lincoln, NE, shortly before the family moved to Seattle, WA. There, Max began a career as a dental technician and their second son, Michael, was born in 1965. Missing the comforts of home, they returned to Alliance and welcomed their third child, Machelle. Max’s dedication to serving others led him to accept a teaching position at Hastings Central Community College in 1966.

Max served honorably as a United States Marine, mentored countless students throughout his fifteen-year teaching career, and founded and operated the successful M&M Dental Lab for decades. Yet, his true life's work was his unwavering commitment to his family, neighbors, and community.

Family was Max’s pride and joy. His devotion to his children and Marilyn was steadfast, and he led by example. He taught his children how to love, how to serve others, and how to persevere. Max was always helping neighbors, contributing to community causes in Hastings, and showing his deep affection for Marilyn. These same values were passed on to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Max had a gift for connecting with others, whether they were human or animal. He made it a habit to engage with everyone he met, from daily visits to the post office, regular stops to the grocery store, and to conversations in the neighborhood. Known as the “dog whisperer” by his grandchildren, Max was an avid animal lover. Max made everyone around him feel comfortable, at ease, and warm. He was consummately funny, he could make you laugh without saying a word, and never to worry, he was always quick with a joke.

Survived by children, Mark (Barbie) and Mike (Kim) Harris and Machelle (Jeff) Sabin; grandchildren, John (Sarah), Michael (Rachel), Hannah, Emmalie, Caleb, and Kaitlyn Harris, Michaela (Dominic) Anania, and Thomas Sabin; great grandchildren, Lily and Jack Harris and Olivia Anania; Max was preceded in death by the love of his life, Marilyn Harris, son Mitchell Harris, parents Ruby Fae and Ace Harris, sister Erma Jean Smith, and brother Ace Harris.

His funeral will be held on Monday August 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 837 Chestnut Avenue, Hastings, NE 68901. A visitation will precede the funeral at 10:00 a.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
