Michael W. DeMuth was born on August 4th, 1949, in Hershey, PA. The youngest of four boys, he was raised by a single mother in Hummelstown. Michael, or ‘Mick’ as his family called him, loved his family and everything related to Pennsylvania. If Mike heard you mention a visit to Pennsylvania or anywhere near PA, he knew someone or had a story to share about that town. It was his favorite pastime.
Mike was drafted into the Army as a dental assistant during the Vietnam War, and eventually found his way to Nebraska in 1978. Omaha was planned as a stop-over on his way to California but when funds ran dry, he stayed put. His accidental settling in Omaha held an unexpected surprise, and he met his future bride, Rebecca Moats, through work. They were married on September 27th, 1980. Mike and Rebecca welcomed one daughter, Anna, in 1986. In 2006, Anna married Chris. Mike was thrilled to inherit a son-in-law, and later welcomed a granddaughter, Finley. Mike would take Finley on adventures to the Rose Theater to take in a play, and then enjoy ice cream afterward – their favorite part.
Never one to meet a stranger, Mike loved people. Whether it was serving them, laughing with them, talking with them, or celebrating them, Mike relished anything involving people. Much of his life’s work was dedicated to helping others, including assisting those with developmental disabilities on a job search, career counseling or lending a hand at church. It’s no surprise that Mike enjoyed being one of Santa’s helpers, as his talent for thoughtful gift giving was often on display. The bearer of a friendly smile, a good story, and a helping hand, Mike created a legacy of loving people well during his seventy-four years.
Mike is preceded in death by a brother, James DeMuth. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca; his daughter Anna (Chris) Evans; granddaughter Finley Evans; brothers Charles (Audrey) DeMuth and Donald (Nancy) DeMuth; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mike was one-of-a-kind and will be missed by all who knew him. Please join us in celebrating him.
