Good-hearted, caring, and genuine, Mike always had an “ear” and a kind word. Mike put others first and had a way to make everyone feel important; he could change a person’s day with a smile. Mike sought out the disadvantaged and hoped to inspire others. Mike had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He could write a thoughtful poem and tell an entertaining story leading to laughter or tears, or a bit of both. Mike excelled in athletics but was just as comfortable sitting at the piano playing a favorite tune. Mike preached moderation and using your God-given talents to “be the best you can be.” Always humble, Mike was the consummate gentleman.
Mike would spend his weekends with Marjean driving from one grandchild’s game to the next, hoping desperately not to miss anything; he was proud of his grandchildren and wanted them to know they are special. Mike’s niece recently said, “Mike was one of a kind. I live by his standards of making others around you feel important, put others first and work hard for others.” In his final stages of dementia, Mike continued to live his life as he had always with benevolence and grace.
Mike was born July 9, 1942 in Kansas City, Kansas. He attended St. Ann's grade school in Prairie Village, KS, where he became passionate about sports. Mike attended Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, MO until his junior year when his family relocated to Omaha, Nebraska and he enrolled at Creighton Prep High School, class of 1960. He was a well-rounded student including student council, homecoming royalty, and 3 sport letter winner: football, basketball and baseball. Mike received the honor of high school football All American. Mike accepted a basketball scholarship to Creighton University and earned a degree in business. Mike and Marjean were married August 10th, 1963. Mike was a successful financial planner for 40 years, and when he retired he worked in fundraising for Mount Michael High School. In 2010, Mike was inducted into the Creighton Prep Hall of Fame. In 2013, Mike and Marjean celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mike coached approximately 40 youth sports teams and volunteered for many groups, clubs, charities and boards. Mike loved his family, friends, Creighton Prep, The 4 Mike’s and all things butterscotch. One of his friends recently said, “Mike was one of the greatest guys that has walked this earth,” and his family agrees.
