Michael Patrick Mullen, age 72, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, surrounded by his family in Omaha, Nebraska.
Michael was born on February 26, 1952 in Omaha to Maurice and Doris (Johnson) Mullen. He was one of seven children and attended St. Pius Catholic School and went to Benson High School. He married Lori Pirie in 1982 and had three children.
Michael pursued a fulfilling career as a special education teacher in the Omaha Public Schools district where he touched the lives of many students over the years and made several lifelong friends along the way.
Michael was known for his great sense of humor and was in constant competition with his siblings for the title of “funniest in the family." He loved listening to music and was a dedicated Notre Dame football fan. Michael enjoyed golf, gardening, being in nature, and watching his daughters and grandson play soccer. The way Michael lived his life set an example for others; he had a playful spirit and a way of being present in each moment. Michael was kind, thoughtful, and made everyone feel welcome.
More than anything, Michael was a devoted father who loved his children beyond measure. He cared for his children with much warmth and grace and taught them to live by the golden rule. From teaching his children to fish and golf to coaching their soccer teams, he truly cherished being a father. It brought him great joy to spend time with and care for his children and his unconditional love for them will be deeply missed.
Michael is survived by his children, Josh Mullen (Missy), Michelle Mullen, and Sheila Juricek (Shawn); and his grandchildren Kay-Lynn, Colin, Julia, Beckett, Colson, and Rhett; and his siblings, Mary Larsen (Marc), Karen McElroy, Nancy Oberst (Matt), Sheila Mullen (Mark), Bill Mullen (Janet), and John Mullen (Julia); and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents Maurice P. and Doris (Johnson) Mullen; brother-in-law Tim McElroy; and nephews Colin McElroy and Matt Oberst.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 17 at John A. Gentleman from 4:00-6:00pm and the funeral will follow on Saturday, January 18 at Holy Name Church at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s name can be made to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in Omaha.
