Muriel M. Munchrath

Muriel was born November 27, 1923 to Roland and Ella (Carraher) Kaufman at the Kaufman home north of Newman Grove, Nebraska. Muriel was preceded in death by her spouse, Donald, parents, infant brother, James, sister Josephine age seven, sister Mary O’Brien, brothers-in-law John O’Brien and Louis Johnson and niece, Patricia Gilbreath.

In 1944 she entered the Cadet Nursing Program at St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in Lincoln graduating in 1947. She furthered her education attending Loyola University in Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She then earned her Master’s Degree in Nursing Education in Chicago at the University of Illinois.

Muriel was united in marriage to Donald P. Munchrath in 1973. Donald passed away in 1992.

Muriel worked in many places during her career. She worked in Veterans’ Hospitals for twelve years. She taught in nursing education in Chicago, St. Elizabeth’s in Lincoln and twenty years at University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing in Omaha.

Muriel also had a military career. She served in the Air Force as a nurse in active duty and reserves during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After thirty years she retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

In her retirement years she was very dedicated to the Serra Club in the promotion of priestly vocations. She had many active roles within parish ministry. She was also an active member of the Omaha Walking Club.

She is survived by her sister, Eileen Johnson, sister-in-law, Ann Landreth, 9 nieces and nephews, 36 great nieces and nephews, and 36 great great nieces and nephews.
