Preceded in death by husband, Robert Maffitt; son, Robert Joseph “Joe” Maffitt; parents, Charles and Clara Burton; brother, John L. Burton. Survived by children, Meri Lynn (John) Ogle and Kerry Beth (Dan) Hrbek; daughter in law, Joanna Maffitt; grandchildren: Dr. Brian Ogle (Matt Epp), Jackson Hrbek, Josey (Chad) Christy, Tyler (Anne) Maffitt and Kirsten (Bill) Poppe; great grandchildren, Brayden Poppe, Elouise Poppe; sister, Karen Sue Davis; brother, Charles Thomas (Marian Sue) Burton; several loving in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Patricia grew up in Marion County, IL, mainly in the small town of Kell in the Southern part of the state. She attended various schools in Marion County. First two years of high school in Kell. Then Kell High School closed and Patricia went to high school in nearby Salem, IL. Later in life when living in Omaha, Patricia took college courses while her kids were growing up, attended College of St Mary’s and graduated from University of Nebraska, Omaha with a Business Degree, majoring in insurance.
Beginning her employment career, she did secretarial work straight out of high school. When she was the Secretary to the Centralia, IL, City Manager, the City Editor for the local newspaper, Bob Maffitt, often came around to get news information. She ended up married to him for 52 years. She and Bob, moved to Landcaster, PA where Bob worked for the local newspaper. After a couple of years there, they moved to Omaha where Bob started a long career working for the Omaha World Herald and Patricia began her new life.
Patricia used her insurance major to work for Mass Mutual and Physicians Mutual for several years as an Underwriter. Outside of her insurance career, she was a Brownie Troop Leader, she taught piano lessons, a church pianist at Terrace Drive Baptist Church, a choir member at the Fort Street Christian Church, then also at the Church of the Master Presbyterian Church, and then also at Underwood Hills Presbyterian Church. In addition, she worked in the library at Laura Dodge School, volunteered at the Omaha Food Bank, and she volunteered at Immanuel in the office. Throughout their retirement, she and her late husband loved to travel together and went to several US and international destinations.
Patricia loved to sing starting as a teenager. While still in IL, she sang on the radio, and with a trio on stage along with traveling Southern Gospel Groups in Centralia, IL and in St. Louis, MO. She loved music her entire life and succeeded in instilling that love into her children.
