Polly was born June 5, 1940 in Hibbing, Minnesota and was the oldest child of five children. She was a devout Orthodox Christian and attended St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota (Fr. Anthony Coniaris). Polly graduated from West High in Minneapolis in 1958, and earned her Bachelors’ degree at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. Some of her fondest memories were working at the Rainbow Café in Minneapolis with many of her childhood Greek friends.
Polly moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1964 after she got married, and had three children. Polly taught Sunday school at St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church (Fr. Eugene Pappas) and wrote a Sunday School Curriculum for the Orthodox Church.
Polly continued her education and earned her Masters’ Degree in English Literature. She taught English at the University of Nebraska, became the first Ombudsman on campus, then taught at College of Saint Mary until she retired at age 62. Polly’s students will always remember her for her extraordinary teaching skills and for keeping the subject informative and entertaining. Polly spent many years spending time with her grandchildren, as well as being the president of the Omaha based Neil Diamond fan club.
Polly is preceded in death by her father, Theodore “Ted, her mother, Mary, her brother, Sam, and her son, John, who recently reposed on November 23, 2023. Losing her son last year was a devastating heartache for Polly.
Polly is survived by her sister, Thea Curtis, her brothers Matt and Tony Kalliman, her daughters Stephanie (Brad), and Jennifer (Tony), as well as five grandchildren, Samantha (Brent), Tyler (Maria), Rachel (Artem), Ethan, and Mary Grace, and three great grandchildren, Grayson, Maizy, and a baby boy arriving this year. In addition, Polly had many nieces, nephews, and friends she loved dearly,
Polly reposed on April 14, 2024 while on Hospice at Hillcrest, where she lived for the past ten years. During the last year of her life, she was delighted to attend her grandson Tyler’s wedding, and even to participate in an event to see one of her favorite actors from her favorite television show (General Hospital). Polly’s memory will be eternal.
