Robert was born in Schleswig, IA, graduating from Schleswig High School in 1944. He was stationed, with the U.S. Navy, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from 1944 until 1946. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, Bob attended Iowa State College, graduating in 1950 with one year of post graduate in City Planning. In 1952, Bob married Gladys Mae Croonquist. Throughout the following years, he was employed with the City Planning Department in Wichita, Kansas, as the City Planner from 1952-1954; the City of Sioux City, Iowa as the City Planning Director from 1954-1958; City of Omaha, Nebraska as the Assistant Planning Director from 1958-1961. Bob also established a private consulting firm in 1961. Robert J. Selander & Associates, provided consulting services in landscape, architecture, community planning and zoning, land development and comprehensive planning for cities and communities. He also served on numerous boards, including, the Board of Directors of Immanuel Medical Center for 16 years, Elected Chairman for 2 years; Chairman of the Immanuel Hospital Foundation from 1987 -2000, and a Member of the Board until 2004; member of the Board of Directors, Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries for 4 years; served as a Chairman of the Nebraska Synod long range Committee under Bishop Reuben Swanson; served on the National Research and Planning Committee of the LCA Church (now ELCA); and a member of the West Omaha Rotary Club.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; parents, Hugo and Edith Selander. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
