Robert W. "Bob" Lovgren

December 18, 1946 — February 15, 2025

Omaha

Robert (Bob) Whitney Lovgren was born in St. Louis, Missouri, December 18, 1946. He passed away peacefully from Alzheimer’s after a long goodbye. Though his memory faded we hold fast to the many stories and memories.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bob found his greatest joy in family. His love for wife, Linda, his children, and grandchildren knew no bounds. He cherished every moment -- capturing memories in photos and videos, cheering from the sidelines at grandchildren’s games, or celebrating with a high five. Bob was incredibly proud of the accomplishments of his wife Linda, son Todd, daughter Laura and his grandkids.

Bob had an insatiable curiosity for family history and the history of Omaha. His passion took him (and many family members) across the U.S., Norway, Sweden, and Germany, uncovering family stories, collecting gravestone rubbings, and tracing ancestral roots. One of his most satisfying projects was compiling the research into a book for his father’s 90th birthday—a gift of legacy and love.

Bob attended Westside High School and then earned a degree in Economics from Iowa State University, followed by an MBA in finance. Bob returned to Omaha, where he built a 42-year career in the Investment Department at Mutual of Omaha. Known for his sharp analytical skills and his legendary "filing system" on the floor of his office, he retired in 2013 ready to devote the majority of his time to hiking and cycling.

Bob was happiest in the great outdoors. He embraced adventure wholeheartedly—cycling across Nebraska and the Allegheny Trail, canoeing rivers, and hiking many summers in the Rocky Mountains. His love for hiking led him to summit Longs Peak, Half Dome in Yosemite, and he even completed the 100-mile trek around Mont Blanc in Europe. One of his most legendary stories involved riding a camel in Petra, much to Linda’s dismay—a tale that was told (and retold) with his hallmark mischievous grin.

A fierce competitor at the card table, Bob was infamous for his love of bridge with friends and took great pride in sharing the family 500 Card Championship with his mother-in-law.

Bob’s life was defined by adventure, family, friends, and an unstoppable drive to learn. Though he is gone, his legacy lives on in the stories retold, challenges conquered, and the unforgettable impact he made on those around him.

Bob is survived by his spouse Linda Hoeppner Lovgren, son Dr. Todd Lovgren and Drue Lovgren, daughter Laura (Lovgren) Paul and Scott Paul, grandchildren Tyson Lovgren, Cole Lovgren, Barrett Lovgren, Keagan Lovgren, Kathryn Paul, Alex Paul, brother John Lovgren and Nancy Lovgren, sister Linda (Lovgren) Gallagher, sister-in-law Emily Silber and Chuck Silber, brother-in-law Chuck Hoeppner, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by parents Dr. Robert E. Lovgren and Dorothy Lovgren, granddaughter Tatum Lovgren, brother-in-law Carl Gallagher, and nephew Michael Gallagher.
