Rosemary (“Rose”) Rogers was born on November 3, 1922 to parents Worthy and Ruby Richardson. She was raised in Kansas City, Missouri attending Kansas City Central High School. Always a highly intelligent and independent woman, her first full-time job was as an air traffic controller at a military base in Coffeyville, Kansas during World War II. As a young adult, she also embarked on a new pursuit as a semi-professional dancer with her sister, Jean.
In 1947, she married John Thomas Rogers, a World War II veteran who served in the Army Air Corps. After their first child was born, they moved to Monte Vista, Colorado so John could pursue a business opportunity before they later settled in Omaha to raise their four children. In addition to being a wonderful wife and stay at home mother, Rose enjoyed her avocation as a part-time dance instructor and often volunteered her time, first at St. Pius grade school and later at various non-profit agencies throughout the Omaha community. Rose and John were happily married for 57 years frequently dancing to the big band music of their generation, whether in their own living room or elsewhere with their many close friends. After John’s health declined, Rose became a loving caregiver before his death in 2004 at the age of 88.
Rose was loved by all. Affectionately known as “Grandma Rose” to her 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, she took a special and unique interest in everyone entering her orbit. As the beloved matriarch of her extended family, she always displayed empathy, compassion, humor and wisdom when dealing with her personal challenges and family issues. Above all, she served as a shining example of how to age gracefully while dancing her way through ups and downs of life. She was mentally astute and the dispenser of insightful advice to loved ones to the end. Rose passed away in her assisted living apartment at Immanuel Village on October 18, 2024 in the presence of family, close friends and her amazing caregivers only about two weeks before she would have celebrated her 102nd birthday. It was fitting that she was able to enjoy a double cherry Manhattan – the Rose and John Rogers beverage of choice for over 50 years – only a few days before her death.
Preceded in death by parents Worthy and Ruby Richardson, husband John Thomas Rogers, brother Rick Richardson and sister Jean Brown. Survived by daughter Sue Mullin (Bob), sons Tom Rogers (Connie), Rich Rogers (Sally) and Tim Rogers. Also survived by fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.
We will miss you, Rose. May you dance forever.
