Thomas J. Maher was born in Omaha Nebraska on July 20th, 1927. Parents are Thomas and Marie Maher. He was the second child of four; Eileen Maher Murphy, Tom Maher, Barbara Smith Maher and Robert Maher. He graduated from Holy Name High School in 1943 and entered the United States Army Air Corp two days after graduation. Tom proudly served in the Pacific during World War II as the crew chief for the Douglas A-26 Invader; a light bomber. After the war, he began his employment with the Metropolitan Utilities District.
Tom married Virginia Ann Shields in Omaha on November 25th, 1950. They raised four children: Steve, Brian, Sally, and Nancy Maher. They both enjoyed their son-in-laws; Marc Wicks and Dick Bleyhl along with their daughter-in-law Maggie Maher. Tom and Virginia were each able to shoot a hole in one as they played golf in sunny Arizona.
Virginia passed away on November, 4th, 1996 of Amyotrophia Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Tom was devoted to his wife as the sole caregiver during Virginia’s illness. Their daughter Sally Bleyhl Maher passed away on December 4th, 2012, of cancer.
In Arizona, Tom was surrounded with many great and wonderful friends, especially Carol LaBerge. He was very active with his eight grandchildren (Jake, Tommy, Andrea, Alex, Matt, Melissa, Nick and Steven) and fourteen great grandchildren.
His life was full, happy and well lived. We are left with love and hope in our hearts along with numerous stories of Tom’s wonderful life!
