Verneta Jean Dirks, born on February 18, 1945, in Stratton, Nebraska, passed away on November 1, 2024, in Omaha, Nebraska. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Verneta married Donovan Dirks on October 25, 1969, in Stratton Nebraska. She was known for her exceptional baking skills, particularly her delicious chocolate chip cookies and during Christmas thumbprint spice cookies. Her dedication to fitness was evident in her daily workouts, often shared with Donovan, where she enjoyed hitting the StairMaster to stay in shape. A passionate sports fan, Verneta could often be found cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, especially during football and volleyball games, where her enthusiastic shouts could be heard from the living room. She cherished her mornings, starting the day with a good cup of coffee and the morning paper. Verneta was a devoted member of St. Wenceslaus Church, where she found community and strength. Her vibrant spirit, love for family, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Verneta is survived by her husband, Donovan Dirks, her cherished family members, including sons Timothy and husband, Eric Haas of Woodbury, MN; Monte and wife, Mia Dirks and their kids Ani and Liam of Eden Prairie, MN; David Savage and wife Dr Michele Kane and their kids Cameron, Jesika, Abbi, Devin and Alexys of Aldi, VA; sisters Sharon and husband, Richard Polson of Stratton; Charlene and husband, Robert Mendoza of Gering; and Lynet and husband, Robert Purnell of Trimble, MO; brother Gaylord and wife, Ronda Vrbas of Stratton. Verneta is preceded in death by her parents Blase and Alice Vrbas; niece Chanta Vrbas-Brown and nephew James Purnell.
Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at 10:30am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with private interment in Omaha National Cemetery.
Visitation with the family one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society.
