Virginia Marie Christiansen

July 26, 1925 — March 29, 2023

Virginia Marie Farrell Christiansen was born on July 26, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa to Miles and Ella Farrell and also welcomed by her sister, Irene. The family eventually moved to Omaha, NE where Virginia attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from North High School. During her high school days she met Emanuel “Chris” Christiansen and they were married soon after high school. There were five children from this union and for years they enjoyed life.

After the children were grown, Virginia went to work again. She worked in public schools for years in the kitchen putting her excellent cooking skills to work. Later she was in charge of the kitchen at St. Richards school where she prepared nutritious meals for the students, always making sure they were well fed. She also worked at Methodist with the catering for special events.

One of her favorite volunteer activities was helping with the mailings at Holy Name Church and School and in 2004 was honored with the Omaha Catholic Volunteer of the Year.

Virginia’s children and grandchildren remember how delighted she was to entertain. Special treats and foods were front and center. Sugar cookies and peanut brittle top the list. And no one in the family has been able to make potato salad as tasty. Entertaining on Thanksgiving and Christmas was a must for the family at Grandma’s. The grandchildren looked forward to the Easter Egg Hunt each year. Candy all over the yard. One year she convinced the Easter Bunny to show up and personally hand out candy.

Memories flood our minds when suddenly our memory maker is taken from us. We pause and can feel the warmth of a hug, see a tender smile, hear a gentle laugh and delight in celebrating special events and more. It is impossible to do justice of all of them from family and friends over 97 years. But soon our tears will dry and smiles will replace them and those special memories will comfort us. Love ya Mom!
