Papa was born in Williamson IA to Joseph and Rose Montgomery. He was a natural athlete from a young age and even played softball with the Belinda Men's Team when he was only 13 years old. He excelled in baseball and basketball for Chariton High School in Chariton IA. Being persistent and ahead of the times, he was also allowed to take a semester of Home Ec for cooking instead of Shop Class.
After high school he was recruited to play baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals farm team in Utah, but after a couple of weeks on the team bus going town to town he'd had enough of AAA life.
He joined the Navy in 1953 and married Beverly on February 14, 1954. He played Semi Pro baseball for the Navy before Bev met him in Corpus Christi, Texas. After she joined him he switched to softball so he wasn't traveling. Teri was born March 1955 and Todd was born April 1970.
After the Navy he went to Drake University then was hired by Firestone and Fidesta (Division of Firestone) as an area manager. His career took the family to Chicago, Denver and then Omaha where he left Fidesta and opened up Montes Mr. Automotive. After closing the store due to Todd's illness he became a stay at home dad.
He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends who loved his humor.
Go Huskers (football, volleyball and womens' basketball) and The Cards.
